Hand crafted furniture today, has greatly dominated
the urban space. This magnificent workmanship predominately grew during
the Mughal period as it was highly encouraged by the royal patronage.
This ancient richness of craftsmanship coupled with the cultural
diversity of India, is prominently reflected in the distinctive style
patterns adopted by artisans all over. We will also find ample
variations in the raw materials i.e. different kinds of timber used in
the making of these furniture items.
The workmanship and furniture type of each land represents a unique
character. We have Gujarat and Maharashtra that boast of time-honored
lacquered wood furniture where as Rajasthan presents an extensive range
of intricately carved sofas, settees and wooden beds. Rajasthani
furniture also displays the most traditional miniature paintings on
various items that are masterpieces in them selves. Kashmir glorifies
its conventional meticulous carving on wood in the form of walnut tree
tables and cabinets.
With changing times and life styles, wrought iron popularly known as
mould iron is increasingly being used in the manufacture of furniture.
