Obsession for jewellery in India dates back to the
era when human civilization was still in its nascent phase. We find
ample evidences of the origin of this beautiful craft which has
invariably formed a footing for younger art to thrive.
Jewellery designed with an assimilation of traditional motifs and
modern patterns to lend it a simple yet sophisticated look, came to be
termed as fashion jewellery. It encompasses a wide array of ornaments
like meticulously carved and engraved necklaces, bangles with deep
in-lay work, abstract and finely chiseled bracelets, earrings defining
finesse to the helm etc. Hand-made jewellery is mastered by craftsmen
from most of the states in India.
Variations in jewellery largely depends on the economic, social and
regional factors. Each state signifies an art form that speaks about
rich cultural heritage of that place. A part of Rajasthan embodies a
craft that involves the use of a substance called lac where as we have
the same state giving us an exquisite collection of ornaments made with
high precision precious and semi-precious stones.
The increasing demand of Indian jewellery in the domestic as well as
international front has led to its expansion into a full fledged
industry employing the skill and expertise of master craftsmen from all
over the country.
